01. Historic vessels
Fishing smacks, naval cutters and half-hull builder's models from three centuries of the working harbour.
What we do
We do our best to turn salt-stained logbooks, carved figureheads and storm-dark canvases into visits you will never forget.
Alistair Reid
Museum Director
Quite simply, the sea made this town. Our galleries trace four hundred years of fishing fleets, naval battles, lighthouse keepers and merchant voyages.
From scrimshaw carved on long whaling voyages to the great storm paintings of the age of sail, every object has weathered something worth hearing about.
Conservators, boatbuilders and archivists work in the open here, so a visit means watching living crafts as well as finished galleries.
School groups, researchers and the simply curious all berth here — the museum belongs to everyone the tide brings in.
Welcome to Thistlewick
Step off the quay and into the age of sail. Salt air, tarred rope and two hundred original works are waiting beyond the museum doors.
Fishing smacks, naval cutters and half-hull builder's models from three centuries of the working harbour.
Storm scenes, harbour sunrises and sailors' portraits — two hundred paintings, prints and sketches of life at sea.
Charts, chronometers, scrimshaw and ships' instruments — the tools that found the way home.
