Flying Cloud

Antonio Jacobsen · Late 19th century · Oil on canvas

The American clipper Flying Cloud racing under a press of canvas, hull heeled to the wind

About this work

The American clipper Flying Cloud set the ocean record in 1851 — New York to San Francisco in 89 days — and kept it for over a century. Ship portraitist Antonio Jacobsen painted her at full stretch, every sail drawing, bow wave creaming.

Jacobsen painted thousands of such portraits, often commissioned by captains themselves. This one hung in a Thistlewick shipping office for ninety years before the firm gave it — frame, dust and all — to the museum.

Look closely

Count the sails: courses, topsails, topgallants, royals and a cloud of studding sails beyond them. Jacobsen knew every rope by name, and sailors still test each other against this canvas — most pass, some don't.
